New seeding rules for the 2012 World Yo-Yo Contest:
Only the five reigning World Champions from 2011 are automatically seeded into their respective final.
Depending on the number of National Champions that show up to compete in a division, a “National Champions Qualifying Round” may be held.
This change is necessary in order to assure that the best unseeded players have a fair chance to advance to the finals and in order to limit the number of finalists in 1A to no more than 20 and in 2A-5A to no more than 10.
NEW RULES FOR 1A IN 2012:
If there are more than 10 National 1A Champions, excluding the reigning world champion, entering the 2012 World Yo-Yo Contest, the National Champions will compete on Day 1 (Thursday) in a "National Champions Qualifying Round” to hold their seed into the finals. These qualifying freestyles will be one minute long.*
The top 8 will qualify for the 1A Championship Finals plus any contestant with a score within 1.00 point of the 8th qualifier. The 1A Championship Finals will be held on Saturday night.
The 1A National Champions who do not hold their seed, qualify to compete in the 1A Semi-Final Round which will be held on Day 2 (Friday) along with the qualifiers from the 1A Preliminary Round.
*Note that if there are less than 10 National 1A Champions, excluding the reigning world champion entering the 2012 World Yo-Yo Contest, all National Champions will automatically advance to the 1A Championship Finals.
1A-Preliminary Round Procedure: One Minute Freestyles
• All non-seeded 1A players will be randomly sorted into three equal size groups, A, B and C, for the Preliminary Round and will compete on Day 1, Thursday.
• The top 20 contestants from the combined groups will advance to the 1A Semi-Final Round which will be held on Day 2, Friday.
• In addition to the 20 automatic semi-final qualifiers, any contestant with a score within 1.00 point of the 20th qualifier will also advance to the 1A Semi-Final Round.
• All 1A National Champions who do not hold their seed also advance to the Semi-Final Round.

1A-Semi-Final Round Procedure: One Minute Freestyles
• The top 10 contestants from the “1A Semi-Final Round” advance to the 1A Championship Finals which will be held on Saturday night.
• In addition to the 10 automatic finals qualifiers, any contestant with a score within 1.00 point of the 10th qualifier will also advance to the 1A Championship Finals.

If there are more than 5 National 2A Champions, excluding the reigning world champion, entering the 2011 World Yo-Yo Contest, the National Champions will compete on Day 1 (Thursday) in a "National Champions Qualifying Round” to hold their seed into the finals. These qualifying freestyles will be one minute long and will be held immediately preceding the preliminaries for the division.*
The top 3 will qualify for the 2A Championship Finals plus any contestant with a score within 1.00 point of the 3rd qualifier. The 2A Championship Finals will be held on Friday.
The 2A National Champions who do not hold their seed, qualify to compete along with the non-seeded 2A players on Day 1 (Thursday. The 2A Preliminary Round will be held immediately following the 2A National Champions Qualifying Round (If the qualifying round is required).

2A-Preliminary Round Procedure: One Minute Freestyles
• The top 5 contestants from the “2A Preliminary Round” automatically advance to the 2A Championship Finals which will be held on Friday night. (Note that the Prelims and Finals are on the same day.)
• In addition to the 5 automatic qualifiers, any contestant with a score within 1.00 point of the 5th qualifier will also advance to the 2A Championship Finals.
• If there are less than 5 seeded 2A players competing, including the reigning world champion, additional contestants may be chosen from the Preliminary Round up to a maximum of 10 finalists. Note that extra contestants will be added only if their scores are within 5.00 points of the 5th qualifier.
